Reviving Ancient Baoris: Stepwell Restoration in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is home to some of the world’s most magnificent stone stepwells (baoris), constructed by ancient architects as sacred reservoirs. Tragically, many fell into disrepair and became dumping grounds over decades of neglect.

With support from heritage conservationists and local village youth, Shiv Dhaam Trust initiated the desilting and stonework repair of a 280-year-old stepwell near Amber. After 4 months of intensive manual seva, crystal-clear groundwater has recharged.

Today, the stepwell not only conserves over 1.2 million liters of rainwater annually, but has also become a cultural meeting point for village rituals.
